If we are going to have a God-centered life we need peace. God tells us his name is Jehovah Shalom: The Lord our Peace.
Why Did Israel Lack Peace?
“Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites.”
“Again”. Which means it isn’t the first time.
They did it, again, but it didn’t stop God from acting or being involved in their lives.
The Israelites were ruled by the Midianites and treated poorly. They raided them and constantly took their crops.
Why does God allow this? He desires for Israel to come back to Him. God desires peace in our life. He desires to fill us with his love, which means he wants us coming back to Him.
True repentance causes God to act. With repentance He gets us on a path that is going to grow us.
“The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.”
Gideon didn’t wasn’t acting, behaving or showing himself as a mighty warrior but that is how God defined him. We need our identity in Christ.
13 “….if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us?.. But now the LORD has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian..”
Where are all the miracles? Where are the wonders? Where are you? Questions we all might ask.
We may struggle with that question, where is God? The question we should ask is, have I done something to keep God away?
“…17 Gideon replied, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me.”
Gideon needs a sign. He asks God for a sign and God responds. We can ask God for a sign but we have to be ready to see it and respond to it.
“…23 But the LORD said to him, ‘Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.’ 24 So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.”
The Lord is Peace. Jehovah Shalom.
Israel is in captivity. Chaos is abounding and God shows up and says I am peace. It is in the distress God tells His name and what he can bring the people. I am greater than your circumstance. I Am peace.
What is Peace? It is not a lack of war. It isn’t a cease fire.
Shalom – Whole, complete, well-being, to have things ordered – no more drama. It is based on our obedience with God. God is asking for obedience. The closer we are to Him, the farther we are from chaos.
We can have well being in spite of our circumstances
How do I get it?
Isaiah 57:20-21 “But the wicked are like the storm-tossed sea, for it cannot be still, and its waters churn up mire and muck. There is no peace for the wicked, says my God.
As long as there is sin there is no peace. Address the sin, we get the peace.
Second Step: Do What Gideon did.
Once he realized God was peace he was at peace. He was going to follow God. I am going to obey Him. I will walk this path.
He walked with the God of Peace so he had peace.
Third Step – Romans 8:5-7
“…For the mind-set of the flesh is death, but the mind-set of the Spirit is life and peace…”
If we don’t get our mind set to God’s way, we won’t have peace, we will have a whole lot of anxiety. The only way to get God’s mindset is to walk with him.
“The peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
We need to keep our eyes, our heart, and our minds set on God and peace will flow in our life.
1. Read God’s Word – Joshua 6, Romans 8
2. A Place of Prayer – Where do I lack peace? What is keeping me from giving the situation to God?
3. Battle – Invite someone into your battle for peace to help encourage you.
