We are in need of a Shepherd. A Shepherd that gives us true security.
Psalm 23: 4-6
5You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
Security Amongst our Enemy
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
God didn’t say, “prepare you a table after I vanquished your enemies.” He didn’t say, “After I drove your enemies away.”
He prepares a table in the presence of my enemy. In the presence of our enemies, He will nourish us. He is with us. We can be surrounded by the enemy and we can sit and eat and be at ease.
God desires us to find His security especially when the pressure is hitting.
In the work place does the boss say, “I want to promote the guy who overreacts in every situation? Who panics when trouble comes?
Anyone can find a problem. Anyone can complain about an issue. Anyone can be overcome with anxiety and feel insecure. The person who can find peace amongst that will always stand out.
“He prepares a table in the midst of my enemies.”
One shepherd said that when the shepherd finds a lost sheep it is usually hungry. The shepherd carries a cloth on his belt and food. When he finds a lost sheep he lays out the cloth and feeds the sheep.
While the sheep eats, the shepherd keeps watch so no predator will come and harm the sheep.
The good shepherd gives us provision and gives us protection. How should this affect us? “My cup overflows.”
What is the result of the 23rd Psalm if the Lord is my shepherd?
“Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”
Surely – For certain.
The verse could have just said goodness and love will follow you. God said surely. The believer can take great comfort that goodness and love will follow. There isn’t a doubt.
Goodness – Good, better, best, merry, precious, beautiful. Only good comes from God. The final outcome can only be a good outcome. We may not always understand it, but we can find comfort in it. God is working towards good.
Love is translated mercy, lovingkindness, kindness, and goodness.
One commentator translated this section as, “blessedness of certainty the wealth of hope.” Certainty and hope is that what we desire. Isn’t it what we want? Isn’t it what we strive for? God offers us that if He is our shepherd.
When God is our shepherd, mercy and goodness follows us. This should bring joy to our heart.
It is Thanksgiving Thursday and the last words of the 23rd Psalm give us the greatest hope; they give us reason to praise; they give us certainty.
Reason For Praise
“And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
We can find certainty and security in our Shepherd. This series has been about Living a God Centered Life in Me Centered World.
God created me and you. We are told we are fearfully and wonderfully made, that we are wholly and dearly loved.
The more God is the center of our lives, the better our life gets, the more comfort, joy and hope we have. The words of the world fall to the side. The lies of Satan that tells us we aren’t good enough matter less and less. The truth of God becomes the only thing we need.
The God Centered Life will have goodness and love follow us all the days of our life and we can dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Amen.
