Today we look at Jehovah, the Self-Revealing One. It is the most frequent word used in the OT to describe God, at 6823 times. We could say it is God’s favorite name for Himself.
Elohim is the mighty, powerful part of God that can make him distant, but God is also a personal God.
Moses was a shepherd for 40 years; now it was time for Moses to get back into the game.
God Reveals Jehovah – Personal One
13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
The spelling is YHWH, all consonants, and the pronunciation is debatable. The Israelites would not even speak God’s name.
Vowels were added so that we could pronounce it as Yahweh or Jehovah. Elohim talks about the power of God. Jehovah relates to His creation.
God isn’t just a force but personal. We are here on purpose. God knows us from the beginning.
Jeremiah 1:5 “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.”
Psalm 139:13 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb”
God is saying I am what I am. Not what I will be. I am at perfection now and forever. I am what I am, not who you want me to be. Because who we want God to be would make God so much less.
15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.
The Lord Jehovah, the God Elohim of your fathers. The personal and the powerful brought together.
God Was Jehovah in the Garden
“The Lord (Jehovah) God (Elohim) took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
Satan deceives Eve and talks of God as mighty but not personal.
4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God (Elohim) knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God (Elohim), knowing good and evil.”
Satan only talks about Elohim not Yahweh, not Jehovah. He wants us to focus on the God that is distant, that is all powerful. He does not want us focusing on the One that is personal. When it is personal, we know that God loves us and cares for us, that he desires good for us.
Jehovah Shows Power and Love
11 The Lord (Jehovah) said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord (Jehovah) ? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”
How do I know Jehovah? How do I know Yahweh?
Exodus 33:11-12; 18-22
God is so real to Moses, but what does Moses ask? He asks to see more of Him, to know Him more.
Too many Christians are satisfied with the introduction to Jesus Christ. Moses wanted more than a hello and an introduction. The more he knew God, the more he wanted.
God revealed Himself in a very profound way to Moses after he was obedient, not before.
God puts Moses in the cleft of a rock. Moses can’t see God’s face, only His back.
After seeing the back side of God, Moses wrote Genesis. How in the world could Moses write Genesis? He wasn’t there. Because God let him see Jehovah. When you encounter God in a real and powerful way, you can testify to that which you haven’t seen.
God wants us to have this encounter, to have knowledge of that which we weren’t there for. He wants to give us an experience we have never had before. That won’t happen because He is Elohim; it will happen as we know Jehovah. He is the self-revealing God.
He has been revealed in Jesus. I wonder, do we know him?
