Election Season

There are seasons: winter, spring, summer and fall. There are seasons we look forward to like pumpkin spice season, Christmas season (a personal favorite), the holiday season. Then there are seasons we try to get through. Like we are in now – election season.
I started thinking about Jesus running for office. I realized if He ran for office, He would probably lose in a landslide. Part of His platform would be Ephesians 4:29 “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Well, that won’t get you elected in the way things are done now.
Here is a serious question: Who do you think has made a bigger impact on this world? Any politician or Jesus Christ? Even if you aren’t a follower of Jesus Christ, you must admit His influence is still here 2,000 years after His death and resurrection (in fact, even the tracking of 2,000 years is based upon the starting point of His birth). People are still fighting for and against Jesus. That is influence.
What makes a bigger difference: a politician or loving your neighbor as yourself?
During Hurricane Harvey in 2017, it was recorded that faith-based organizations sent $210 million to Texas to help out. That wasn’t all. Also 45,000 volunteers showed up, and they logged 526,000 hours of help. The organization tracking this said they also could not account for all the individual churches who, on their own, sent money, resources and people. The most unreported figure is what faith-based organizations do during catastrophes. The impact they make is profound.
Jesus showed us that if we want to change the world, it starts as simply as loving your neighbor. We can make a life changing difference by doing that.
At Covington Christian | Church on the Round we take our small steps to love our neighbor and change the world. We feed children with the PB&J program. We open our facility so youth have a place to play baseball and softball. We do Life Skills Training for our youth to equip them for tomorrow. We continually work on loving one another.
We should strive to be like Jesus, a person who never was elected but changed the world forever and in magnificent ways. His death on the cross gave us salvation.
Some of the most amazing words Jesus gave us is before He left earth were, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” (John 14:12)
We can do what Jesus did and more. Think about that. Do what Jesus did and more. The miracles He performed, the love He showed, the lives He changed – we can do that. It is good to get out and vote. What an amazing difference can be found, not at the ballot box, but by being like Jesus.
